The most beautiful temple in the entire northern part of India. I have seen many temples but this one has crossed every other in terms of architecture. A Temple of Shiv : the ultimate God, the god of gods. Which has no particular form and is present everywhere.

The Kandariya Mahadev is the largest and most evolved temple in Khajuraho in terms of the blending of architecture and sculpture, and one of the finest in India. Probably built around 1020, it follows the five-shrine design; and its central shikhara, which towers 102 ft above the platform, is actually made up of 84 subsidiary towers building up in increments. The feeling of ascent is repeated inside, where each succeeding mandapam is a step above the previous one, and the garbha griha is higher still; dedicated to Shiva, this inner sanctum houses a marble linga with a 4-ft circumference. Even the figures on this temple are taller and slimmer than that elsewhere. The rich interior carving includes two beautiful toranas (arched doorways); outside, three bands of sculpture around the sanctum and transept bring to life a whole galaxy of Hindu gods and goddesses, mithunas, celestial handmaidens, and lions.

This is the largest and the loftiest temple located in the premises of the Western Group of Temple Complex in Khajuraho. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The outer walls are covered with sculptures of apsaras, dasis, mythical creatures and gods and goddesses in painstaking detail to form and proportion. It is a breathtaking monument and one wonders how such structures were erected that have stood the test of time without even a scratch, whereas today's structures built by the best engineers have such a short lifespan!!
